What is Certificate of Merit®
Certificate of Merit® (CM) is an evaluation program that was created and developed by the Music Teachers' Association of California in 1933, and continues to evolve over time to best meet the needs of teachers and students.
The CM program encourages and promotes consistent and conscientious effort on the part of the student, and rewards meritorious achievement with certificates and special recognition. The program is based on a solid foundation of systematic progression through eleven (11) Levels, from Preparatory through Advanced (Level 10).
The CM program includes students performing musical repertoire and technique based on requirements set forth in an applicable instrument Syllabus (e.g. Harp, Piano, Winds, Strings, Voice). Outstanding young musicians are given the opportunity to appear on State Convention programs.

Documents for printing will now be emailed to CM teachers or available on your Teacher Portal.
Read the latest CM newsletter for the most recent updates and requirements.
You may pick up the students' theory tests, evaluation result sheets, certificates, honors' seals and senior medals in the beginning of April, otherwise they will be mailed to you.

MTAC State Convention
MTAC hosts the annual State Convention where world-renowned artists and teachers give recitals, lectures, presentations, and master classes. More than 2,000 members, guests, student performers and their families attend this culminating event of the year. Visit the MTAC State website to learn more.

Students demonstrating exceptional skill at his/her Evaluation may be selected to perform at annual MTAC State Convention Recitals.
We are so glad your child(ren) are participating in Certificate of Merit. All the participating teachers of the MTAC San Francisco Branch have worked hard to make sure that students will have a positive and rewarding experience.

FAQ for Certificate of Merit
I am new to the CM evaluation program. Whom shall I contact first and how & where can I find out detailed information?
Contact the San Francisco Branch CM team first. You will need to create a Teacher Portal in the new online system. From this site you will find detailed CM detailed information.
When is the CM enrollment period, and how do I enroll my student/s?
Teachers register their students in the Fall; only MTAC teachers who have paid their membership dues by July 31 may participate in Certificate of Merit®.
When is the San Francisco Branch Work Agreement due?
The Work Agreement must be postmarked by November 12.
When can I enter my students' repertoire online and when is the deadline?
For all relevant application deadlines, login to your Teacher Portal.
