December Greetings!

  3. Recital Guidelines

I begin with great news!

A grant of $7,500.00 was just approved by the Board of Directors of the Crescent Porter Hale Foundation for our branch's After School Keyboard Program. Keiko Banks, our After School Keyboard Program Director, started the project two years ago with the help of Scott Pratt and Keiko's colleague Jean Nakashima. Help was also provided by the firm Nancy Quinn and Associates and our branch Board member, Brenda Yodice, in editing the final proposal. This grant will strengthen our After School Keyboard Program, which is also supported generously by a grant from the Ross McKee Foundation. The MTAC- SF Board would like to express much appreciation to all of the above mentioned for their help and perseverance in accomplishing this vital long- term project.

Master Class with Paul Roberts

I'm grateful and pleased to announce that Paul Roberts is returning to present our yearly master class (see encl. flyer). Paul's mastery and scholarship were on display for our branch two years ago when he focused on the piano music of Debussy and Ravel. He has the elusive ability to bring an engaging and focused energy that really holds ones attention- he is completely involved in what he does!

This year Paul will focus on the Sonatas of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven; major works of Chopin, Schumann, and Liszt; major works of Debussy and Ravel. This is an opportunity not to be missed and is very reasonably priced! The Master Class will take place on Sunday, Feb. 5th 2006 from 1 pm to 4 pm in Knuth Hall at San Francisco State University, College of Creative Arts, 1600 Holloway Ave. (off 19th), SF.

Teachers who wish to have a student play should fill out a recital form and send it with a check for $35.00 (payable to MTAC-SF) to the Master Class Committee Chair, Scott Pratt at 927 Taraval St. #1, SF, CA 94116.

For more information call him or email at scottrpratt@sbcglobal.net

Please send at least 2 possible selections from this criteria; 1) a Sonata by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven, 2) a major work by Chopin, Schumann, or Liszt 3.a major work by Debussy or Ravel. Deadline to receive master class applications is Jan. 15, 2006. Please don't delay. Paul has requested to see the program at least 2 weeks before the class. Note: For students playing in the master class 1 (one) parent will be admitted free of charge.

Tickets can be purchased in advanced for $10.00 before Sunday, Jan. 29 2006 by mailing a check, payable to MTAC-SF, to our branch treasurer Hui-Chong Kim at 644 Santa Barbara Ave., Millbrae, Ca 94030 Tickets at the door will be $15.00. Students $5.00. SFSU Students free with ID.

Recital Information

The New Recital Application Form is available at http://www.mtac-sf.org/branch_program.htm Please type your student's information into this webpage and print it out, then send the printout and recital fees to the recital coordinator.

Please read the enclosed Recital Guidelines carefully. Please be thorough when filling out the Recital Application forms and check to make sure the information you provide is accurate before it is sent. For example: If a student is playing a movement(s) from a sonata or sonatina, include the movement number (I- Allegro, II- Adagio, etc.). Be sure and include the key of a work - not just the number (Sonata No. 1 in F minor Op. 2 no. 1). Time the student and be as accurate as possible when listing a piece's length (duration). If incorrect or incomplete information is entered on the recital form it takes many hours to search for the correct information and then contact each teacher.

Esther Chan is no longer our Recital Coordinator (Chair). Please do not contact her regarding recitals.

Brenda Yodice is the coordinator for the February 12, 2006 recital. Location: St. Stephen Church 601 Eucalyptys Ave in SF (at 23rd Ave) Please send your applications along with the $15.00 per student fee by the deadline of January 28, 2006 to: Brenda Yodice at 2562 Francisco Blvd. #11, Pacifica, Ca 94044. Her email address if yodice@comcast.net. The recital coordinator will change from month to month. If there are any doubts about who the recital coordinator is for any particular month contact Scott Pratt at scottrpratt@sbcglobal.net. Be sure and check the January newsletter for the March, April, and May recital coordinators.

Certificate of Merit Evaluations

Certificate of Merit Evaluations Entering Evaluation Information online will be available on January 2nd. You can find all the mailed documents and CM information on the SF branch website for your convenience. If you need help, don't hesitate to contact Keiko Banks or Esther Chan.

We need High-school student helpers on both CM days. MTAC-SF pays $5.00 an hour for this service. The helpers are much needed because parents are not allowed in the examination area. Please contact Keiko Banks at sbanks@community.net.
