State Programs Information for the State Program go to www.mtac.org The Music Teachers' Association of California (MTAC) sponsors a music study program entitled Certificate of Merit (CM). Initiated in 1933, the CM Program now involves approximately 30,000 students annually statewide. There are evaluation opportunities for students of Piano, Violin, Cello, Viola, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bassoon, Horn, Voice and Harp. This evaluation program is open to students of all levels. Students prepare for a yearly evaluation in the spring, and qualified students will be eligible to perform at the Branch Honor Recital and the annual State Convention in July. The evaluation includes technique, sight-reading, ear-training, theory and performance. For more information go to the SF Branch website/ Certificate of Merit and MTAC State website. In September 1971 Gretchen Kuehny Geber, cellist, and Eleonor Dalton, pianist, both members of the San Fernando West Valley Branch, co-founded the VOCE program/competition. It was designed to present an opportunity for students to perform as soloists and in chamber ensembles. They named the project VOCE, representing the following: Vocalists, Orchestral instrumentalists, Chamber music, Ensembles. The purpose of this program is to inspire top caliber students toward their highest standard of achievement through competing at the local level. Students that pass state competition evaluations receive monetary prizes, and perform at the honorary VOCE recital at the State Convention. Currently many of the winners of the VOCE program are distinguished artists in various orchestral and opera theatres statewide and in Europe.
Composers Today is a program designed to assist and encourage teachers to include composition in their curriculum. It provides both students and teachers an opportunity to have their compositions evaluated by qualified judges/evaluators and heard in public performance. It is the capstone to being a complete musician. Composer's Today Evaluations Rules and General Information Friends of Today's Music was established in 1986. With a firm commitment to the music of our time, and indeed to the future of classical music, FTM has sponsored the creation of a wide variety of significant works, written especially for students by many of today's leading, internationally renowned composers. Each commissioned work is premiered by young musicians during the MTAC convention while the audience follows along with the published score. This innovative program brings composer, performer, and audience together for an adventure into the music of today. The San Francisco Branch sends delegates to the convention every year, and the branch may partially compensate the delegates for their registration fees. The convention features performances by honored students, teachers and recording artists. Both concerto and solo competitions are held, and there are many educational offerings, such as pedagogy sessions, lectures, and master classes with top artists. The Convention alternates years between southern and northern California, and takes place in early July. For more information, visit the MTAC State website at Annual Convention and see the SF branch website under Certificate of Merit, MTAC State Convention. |
